Photobiomodulation or Laser therapy - its all about light energy!

Photobiomodulation (PBM) or Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive, painless modality that delivers specific wavelengths of light into tissues.  This stimulates cellular processes such as;

- Increased ATP production (cellular energy)

- Modulation of inflammatory pathways

- release of endorphins and nitric oxide

- improved microcirculation and oxygenation of tissues

 

Together these effects help to reduce pain, enhance tissue repair and improve mobility - in a nutshell light energy stimulates cellular activity to accelerate healing.

There is currently a bit of hype about red light therapy but it is important to understand the differences between therapy and devices.  Red Light LED therapy uses low power non-coherent light which scatters considerably from hair, reducing penetration. It is only suitable for suitable for superficial/dermal issues and requires long treatment times to be effective.  Photobiomodulation (LLLT) is coherent laser light which is higher powered and can penetrate up to 5cm ideal for treating tendons, ligaments and deep muscles.  It is paramount that clinicians are qualified in laser therapy treatment and can correctly determine and administer an effective treatment dose to the target tissue.

Photobiomodulation is used in veterinary rehabilitation for;

- Pain relief (acute and chronic)

- Osteoarthritis management

- Wound repair and healing

- Scar tissue reduction

- Soft tissue injuries (strains, sprains, muscle tears)

 

All orthopaedic surgeries at The Referral Centre, Hamilton include photobiomodulation post surgery (before discharge) as part of their surgical package.

 

Photobiomodulation sessions can be standalone appointments (20mins) or incorporated into hydrotherapy rehabilitation sessions.
